Have you ever noticed that the strongest parts of an egg are the top and bottom? That's why we crack them at the sides, it's easier to break them. Just about everything has a strong point and a weak point like an egg - so when you're packing, it can be helpful to think of everything like an egg. Where is its strongest point? For example, when you're packing your crockery, the strongest point is likely to be the edges of the plates because they're thicker, so plates should be packed vertically into the boxes, and not flat. That way, if other items are place on top of the box, the strongest point of the plates is taking the weight. Think of other fragile items in the same way. Don't forget to include plenty of padding material in boxes containing fragile items. If you have items you're particularly concerned about, a little bubble wrap around the item is a good precautionary measure, particularly for very fragile vases. Smaller fragile items, like figurines, can be bubble wrapped and then packed firmly (so they don't roll around) inside a small box or plastic container before you place that container into the larger packing box. Just remember to label it clearly so whoever opens the container when you arrive doesn't open it too enthusiastically and send the precious little items crashing to the floor! |
